I have never heard of using baking soda to kill roaches. We have always used borax to take care of them.

We ran into this problem while living in the southern united states.
What we did was similar to the sugar and baking powder idea.
We mixed dry Nestles Quick with baking powder and it worked really well.
We mixed it all together and put it into bottle caps all over the place then let them have at it.
They eat it and carry it back home.
They all eat it and the baking powder makes them explode.
Soon, no more roaches!
